Our Statewide Grassroots Organization

Senator Barack Obama

During the course of building towards the Washington State Caucuses, we were fortunate to be able to put together some good LD and County teams, and to start developing good statewide communication channels. With the General Election upon us, we have a tremendous opportunity to refine, strengthen and further develop that which we’ve created in building towards the precinct caucuses.

The purpose of having a solid statewide structure is to facilitate the growth and development of the county and LD organizations — not to direct and control those local organizations. The working relationships which we continue to build through this campaign will provide the basis for continued unity and political action beyond the General Election.

The sections regarding the growth of our statewide structure are not carved in stone, but are open to discussion and further development. The ideas and concepts we present here are, in our belief, a good starting point from which to continue our journey forward.

There are three basic sections to this presentation:

The Organizational Structure page includes a flow chart and an explanation of what we believe is a good model on which to further develop our statewide grassroots organization. The most important reason for developing such a structure is to faciliate the sharing and flow of information, resources and ideas in a bottom—up fashion.

The PCO Recruiting pages are the largest part of this section. Since the growth and development of both our organization and the Democratic Party is dependant upon the growth and development of the PCOs, this topic requires more discussion than the other sections.

We’ve also included a section about working with the Official Campaigns. We’re all working towards many of the same goals, and this should be respected. Understanding a few philosophical differences, however, will go a long ways towards ensuring the dynamic growth of our organization and the Democratic Party.

The final section discusses the OFA slogan of “Respect, Empower, Include”. This is a very powerful organizing concept, and one we should strive to practice from our hearts.
